Working through my final year studying Mathematics at York University, I was struggling to find a career which would suit my strengths. I knew I was not one to be locked away in an office five days a week, much more of a people person with a strong creative side. Having spent time talking to Rosanna about the work she had been involved in with the voluntary and community groups, and knowing her to be very much a people person, I thought she would be perfect to "shadow". Having not done any 'formal' work experience I was interested in seeing what type of roles were available, as well as having an insight into the working environment.
I arranged to spend the week with Rosanna in London, not quite sure of what to expect…………….Rosanna had an entire work plan set out for me! We started our first day with meeting and a planned agenda which included a full week of meetings, events and activities. I was given the chance to see the voluntary sector in action, meet with a self employed Event Manager, visit a trade show at Olympia and attend a business networking meeting, an essential tool for business. I was also invited to Allen and Overy who were working with Rosanna on a marketing project. This opened my eyes to variety of career opportunities that could be available to me and the different types or organisation that were out there.
Throughout the week Rosanna was studying my approach to the new situations I found myself in and by the end of the week we were able to provide a very strong SWOT analysis. She coached me through some areas and challenged me in others - helping me to understand my style of working and the way I tackle things.
The approach Rosanna took to planning and managing the week was great - organised, well structured and I always felt to be in a relaxed environment. We always started and ended the day with a briefing session looking at aims and objectives; and then I was allowed to relax! Rosanna is approachable, very knowledgeable and has a great way of guiding people through areas which are new to them.
The week spent alongside Rosanna definitely had its rewards. By the end of it I was easily able to pick out my strengths; my areas for development were highlighted, and I had a much better idea of the working world which set me in good sted for my future career path.
