Case Study - Sick Children's Trust

Sick Children's Trust - Facilitation of Strategic Awayday (November 2006)

Aim of the Sick Children's Trust

To provide high quality 'Home from Home' accommodation for families whose children are receiving hospital treatment for serious illnesses. The Sick Children's Trust exists to support and promote the child's recovery and further to support the fabric and well being of the family as a whole. In carrying out this mission it will ensure that the highest standards of service are applied throughout.

The brief

To facilitate a Strategic Away Day with the objective of producing a 3 Year Business Plan

The Chief Executive Claudette Watson first met Rosanna on an NCVO course and through networking kept in touch. The SCT was due to renew it's business plan and planned an Away Day for all staff and Trustees to attend. It just so happened that Rosanna had just completed her re-branding for Conker Consulting and her first Newsletter happened to make its way to Claudette's desk. The CEO didn't give it a second thought she contacted Rosanna to explain what they were looking for and to see if she could help. Both parties agreed to work together on this project.

What happened

"Rosanna did an excellent job of keeping everyone focused and sticking to the programme. She was a good judge at assessing the situation throughout the day as she was not afraid to let a couple of items run a bit longer if there was a need. She came across very well, explaining in a clear and detailed manner all tasks that needed to be completed."

"Rosanna managed to bring a friendly and humorous approach to the day which made people feel at ease. She had various ideas to get everyone involved, sharing knowledge about themselves that others might not necessarily know and that worked very well."

"The day was a success because of her good preparation, good organisational skills, professional approach and friendly manner. I'm sure we achieved more with her involvement than we would have without."

"Strategic Away Days are an opportunity for everyone to come together as a team to create and plan the way forward for the organisation for the next 3 - 5 years. With everyone taking a broad perspective, agreement is needed on what the future success will look like for the organisation. Hiring Rosanna was a great decision as she helped us achieve a lot of groundwork to go forward to create our new business plan."

Quotes from delegates

The individual working groups were skilfully put together. The opportunity to learn more about other areas of SCT operation from a broader perspective than I have at Trustee meetings was very valuable. - S. Masters (Trustee)

The session renewed my enthusiasm for the SCT and I hope to keep up my involvement and visit more homes over the next year. - J. Kirkland (Trustee)

It helped me to see how I fitted into the bigger picture. - A. Wyatt (House Manager)

It has made me proud to be working for such a worthwhile charity with a dedicated team. - K. Wines (Administrator)

Rosanna's view

Facilitating Strategic Away Days is always a challenge and a balancing act. I have to ensure the objectives of the day are reached whilst giving everyone a chance to contribute but always keeping a keen eye on the clock.

I found working with the Sick Children's Trust very rewarding as well as good fun. Everyone was open to the day and I was very iimpressed by both the staff and the Trustees commitment to their organisation. I feel we achieved a huge amount within one day and look forward to hearing of their progress.
